Link bait is any feature or content on your website that baits viewers to place links to it from their own websites and social networking profiles.  Your link bait must be interesting, entertaining, and useful enough to attract people’s attention.  Link baiting is a form of viral internet marketing.

Increase the Quantity of High-Quality links to your Website.  You need to create a mini public relations campaign around the release of your link bait articles, to give social networks and bloggers incentive to link to your webste in tandem.  Your link bait content must be interesting, useful, entertaining, or controversial to attract people’s attention.  Here are some common tactics for link baiting:

  • Widget Hook  A tool or badge that can be embedded on other websites, with a link included.
  • Evil Hook  Controversy can get lots of attention.  It can also hurt your credibility so be careful with this hook.  Provide strong reasons for your unpopular, mean, or unappealing statements.
  • Tool Hook Useful tools will gain attention and links.
  • Humor Hook  Funny stories, jokes, bizarre pictures, and mocking cartoons can gain links to your website.
  • News Hook  New information with citations can increase the links to your website.
